About Iorek

Iorek Byrnison is an armoured bear (Panserbjorne) who currently resides in Svalbard. Iorek was found by Lyra living and working in Trullesund and became close friends with Lyra Belacqua and Lee Scoresby after journeying with them to Svalbard. The people of Trullesund had given Iorek spirits and taken his armour. Without his armour, Iorek was forced to work shaping metal in a workshop. He and Lyra had retrieved his armour and escaped, beginning their journey to Svalbard, where Iorek would later regain his rightful place as king.

Like all bears, Iorek is very intelligent, and cunning. He cannot be tricked. These traits proved to be very useful during their journey in the north, and lead to Iorek defeating Iofur as king.

Although he was hostile at first, Iorek has shown great compassion and love for Lyra, even when she thought she had betrayed him. Although though Lyra and Iorek had to part ways, they still remain very close.

Importance to the Novel

Iorek Byrnison is arguably one of the most important character in the Golden Compass. Although he may have seemed like nothing more than Lyra's mode of transportation, he was in fact much more.

He was a friend to Lyra when she had no one else to trust. He was there to help Lyra and the Gyptians out of every unfortunate situation. He taught Lyra about the Panserbjorn, which later led to the rescue of Lord Asriel and the opportunity for Iorek to become king.

Iorek becoming king was a proud moment for the bears of Svalbard.  The lives of all the bears were improved when Iofur was dethroned. They no longer had to live in filth, they could be true bears again.

Panserbjorn

The Panserbjorn are large white armoured bears. They live up north in a place called Svalbard. Armour to the panserbjorn is like a daemon to a human. It's made up of special materials and is essentially part of themselves. The panserbjorn are extremely intelligent, much more intelligent than humans. They are cunning, fast, and cannot be tricked. The exception to this is when the panserbjorn stop acting as bears.

When this happens they begin to take on human traits and lose their skills. This was demonstrated by Iofur Raknison when he was tricked by Lyra.
